One of the oldest programs – now cancelled (surprise) was the rearing pen project. The ODWC wouldn’t even keep it going when we said that we would take over all work and financial costs. Thanks again, Mr. Bolton!
The rearing pens were located in the slough below the Spillway Dam. They were put in each spring and taken out in the fall. 10,000 brown trout on one side and 10,000 rainbow trout on the other. They would be fed and raised there until approximately 16″ in length and then released into the Zone II (Lower Red Zone) Trophy Water.
Although we, admittedly, still had a few kinks in the system, we weren’t ready to give up on it. Maybe someday we can get it back up and running again. This was one of the best ongoing projects we ever had on the river, for the river.
